Toronto [Canada], May 27 (ANI): Union Minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday paid tribute at the Kanishka Memorial in Toronto, honoring the victims of the Air India Flight 182 bombing and meeting with family members of those who lost their lives in the attack.
Describing the bombing as one of the deadliest acts of terrorism in aviation history, Goyal said India and Canada are working together to ensure that such a tragedy is never repeated.
In a post on X, Goyal said, “Paid tribute today at the Kanishka Memorial at Humber Bay Park, standing in quiet remembrance of the victims of the Air India Flight 182 bombing. The mid-air bombing remains one of the most tragic acts of terrorism in aviation history. I also met with family members of several victims who shared their stories of loss and resilience. India and Canada are cooperating to ensure that such a tragedy never repeats.”
On June 23, 1985, Air India Flight 182 was destroyed in a mid-air bombing carried out by the Canada-based Khalistani terrorist group Babbar Khalsa near Cork, Ireland, killing all 329 people on board.
Goyal is currently in Canada on a three-day official visit from May 25 to May 27 as India and Canada continue negotiations on the proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), aimed at strengthening economic ties between the two countries.
During the visit, Goyal met Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Foreign Minister Anita Anand, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Heath MacDonald, and Minister of International Trade Maninder Sidhu, among others.
He also held discussions with leading Canadian industry executives to explore investment opportunities and expand bilateral economic cooperation.
The meetings focused on strengthening collaboration in financial services, infrastructure, sustainable agriculture, and critical minerals processing.
Goyal said the discussions highlighted the importance of trade, investment, and technology partnerships in advancing the strategic relationship between India and Canada. (ANI)
