Washington, DC, April 25 (ANI): US President Donald Trump has cancelled the planned visit of an American delegation to Islamabad for a second round of talks with Iran, citing the trip as unnecessary.
The delegation, led by Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and senior adviser Jared Kushner, was scheduled to travel to Pakistan as part of efforts to advance peace discussions related to the ongoing conflict in West Asia.
According to reports, Trump made the decision shortly before departure, stating that long-distance travel for inconclusive discussions was not warranted.
“I’ve told my people… you’re not making an 18-hour flight to go there… We have all the cards. They can call us anytime they want,” Trump said, as quoted in media reports.
The move comes shortly after Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his delegation departed Islamabad following meetings with Pakistani leadership, without engaging in direct talks with US representatives.
Reports indicate that the Iranian side conveyed its positions and demands through Pakistani intermediaries rather than participating in face-to-face negotiations.
The planned second round of talks in Islamabad was expected to build on earlier discussions involving US Vice President JD Vance and Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, which did not yield a breakthrough.
With both the US delegation’s trip cancelled and the Iranian delegation’s departure, prospects for immediate dialogue between Washington and Tehran appear uncertain, as diplomatic efforts shift toward alternative channels. (ANI)
