LONDON, UK, May 12 (ANI): British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has firmly rejected calls for his resignation following the Labour Party’s recent electoral setbacks, insisting that he remains focused on governing and noting that no formal process to remove him has been initiated.
According to a post on X by Steven Swinford, Political Editor of The Times, the Prime Minister made his position clear during a high-stakes Cabinet meeting, signaling his intention to withstand mounting internal pressure. Starmer reportedly stressed the procedural reality of the situation, stating, “The Labour Party has a process for challenging a leader, and that has not been triggered.”
The Prime Minister’s defiance comes amid growing criticism from within his own party following recent election losses. Addressing the impact of leadership speculation, Starmer warned that “the past 48 hours have been destabilising for government and that has a real economic cost for our country and for families.”
While acknowledging the seriousness of Labour’s poor showing in recent polls, Starmer maintained that his attention remains fixed on delivering on government commitments.
“As I said yesterday, I take responsibility for these election results and I take responsibility for delivering the change we promised,” he said.
Attempting to draw a line under the leadership debate, Starmer urged Cabinet ministers to focus on governance rather than internal divisions.
“The country expects us to get on with governing. That is what I am doing and what we must do as a Cabinet,” he remarked.
The Prime Minister’s comments come as he faces increasing pressure from dozens of Labour lawmakers. According to CNN, MPs have urged him to resign after disappointing local election results, even as Starmer warned that another leadership upheaval would plunge Britain into “chaos.”
The backlash intensified after Labour suffered major setbacks in council elections across England. CNN reported that Reform UK and the Green Party made significant gains, while Labour also faced losses in devolved elections in Scotland and Wales.
Speaking directly to party members in London, Starmer accepted responsibility but defended his leadership.
“What we witnessed with the last government was the chaos of constantly changing leaders, and it cost this country a huge amount,” Starmer said, adding that “a Labour government would never be forgiven for inflicting that on our country again.”
Despite his appeal for unity, internal dissent has continued to intensify. More than 70 Labour MPs are reportedly calling on him either to resign or announce a timeline for his departure.
The tensions have already had practical consequences within government, with several party members resigning from ministerial aide positions in protest, according to CNN.
The growing dissatisfaction comes despite Labour’s landslide victory in the 2024 UK General Election. Starmer has increasingly faced criticism over immigration policy, economic management, and what opponents describe as a lack of political vision and charisma.
According to CNN, Labour’s losses of more than 1,400 council seats and control of the Welsh Parliament have led some lawmakers to question whether Starmer can lead the party into the next general election scheduled for 2029.
Attention has now shifted to Labour’s internal leadership rules. Party mechanisms could allow challengers to force a contest if they secure support from at least 81 MPs, representing one-fifth of Labour’s parliamentary strength.
As speculation intensifies, former deputy prime minister Angela Rayner has emerged as a possible successor, although she has not formally announced any leadership challenge.
In remarks cited by CNN, Rayner said Starmer must “meet the moment and set out the change our country needs.”
Responding to growing criticism, Starmer acknowledged the need for policy recalibration.
“Like every prime minister, I have learned a lot in the first two years in the job in terms of the policy changes that our country faces. Incremental changes won’t cut it,” he said.
According to CNN, Starmer is now attempting to signal a broader policy reset, including efforts to improve relations with the European Union following years of Brexit tensions, though he has offered limited details on the direction of those plans.
The crisis has drawn comparisons with previous periods of political instability in Britain, although analysts cited by CNN suggested Starmer’s current predicament appears particularly severe due to the scale of internal opposition within the Labour Party. (ANI)
