WASHINGTON, D.C., May 12: US President Donald Trump is increasingly considering renewed military action against Iran as frustration grows within his administration over stalled negotiations and Tehran’s response to a proposed agreement aimed at resolving the ongoing West Asia conflict, according to a report by CNN.
Citing sources familiar with the matter, CNN reported that Trump has become increasingly dissatisfied with Iran’s approach to negotiations surrounding its nuclear programme and broader regional tensions.
According to the report, the Trump administration is also frustrated by Iran’s continued influence over the strategic Strait of Hormuz and what Trump reportedly views as divisions within the Iranian leadership that have slowed diplomatic progress.
Iran’s recent response to a US-backed proposal has reportedly intensified doubts among American officials over whether Tehran is genuinely prepared to engage in meaningful negotiations.
The report further stated that divisions have emerged within the Trump administration regarding the next course of action.
Some officials, including figures within the Pentagon, are said to favor a more aggressive strategy involving targeted military strikes intended to further weaken Iran and increase pressure on Tehran.
Others within the administration, however, continue to advocate allowing additional time for diplomatic engagement.
One official cited by CNN noted that Washington and Tehran appear to be operating under different timelines and expectations, adding that Iran’s decades-long experience under economic sanctions may mean it does not feel the same urgency that the US administration expects.
Trump on Monday publicly expressed his dissatisfaction with Iran’s proposal and suggested that the current ceasefire arrangement between the two sides remains fragile.
Speaking to reporters during a maternal healthcare event at the Oval Office, Trump sharply criticised Tehran’s response.
“After reading that piece of garbage they sent us, I didn’t even finish reading it. They (Iran) are on life support. The ceasefire is on massive life support,” Trump said.
The President also described Iran as being at its weakest point in recent years.
According to CNN, Trump held another meeting with his national security team at the White House on Monday to review possible policy options regarding Iran.
However, sources familiar with the discussions told the network that no major decision is expected before Trump departs for his scheduled visit to China on Tuesday afternoon. (ANI)
