WASHINGTON, D.C., May 12 (ANI) — US President Donald Trump on Monday spoke about his administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration and anti-drug operations, saying countries that initially refused to take back deported migrants eventually agreed after Washington warned them of tariffs.
He also claimed a significant drop in fentanyl smuggling across US borders and praised American law enforcement for its service.
Trump made the remarks while hosting his second “Rose Garden Club” dinner at the White House in honor of Police Week.
“Since I took office, our administration has made nearly 200,000 criminal arrests nationwide, a record, and we’re getting them off the streets and putting them in jail or in many cases sending them back to their lovely countries where they came from. And sometimes their country will say, ‘We don’t want them, we’re not taking them.’ I’ll say, ‘That’s okay, slap about a 25% tariff on their country,’ and they call back, ‘We would love to have them back immediately,’” Trump said.
He said the Department of Homeland Security had removed nearly 615,000 illegal immigrants from the United States over the past 12 months and claimed that no illegal immigrants had been admitted through the southern border.
Speaking about fentanyl smuggling, Trump said the flow across the border had fallen by more than 60% and that smuggling by sea was down by 97%.
He praised agencies including ICE, Homeland Security, the US Marshals, ATF, FBI, and state and local police, crediting them for the gains.
“They’re all incredible patriots, they’re incredible people,” he said. (ANI)
