TEHRAN, June 10 (ANI) — Iran’s Foreign Ministry has strongly condemned US military strikes on southern Iran, describing the overnight attacks as a “blatant violation” of international law.
According to a report by Al Jazeera, the ministry said in an official statement that “in the early minutes of Wednesday morning … the U.S. regime launched brutal attacks against areas in the south of the country.”
Tehran argued that the American military action violated established international legal norms and the United Nations Charter.
The ministry stated that “these attacks constitute a blatant violation of the United Nations Charter, particularly Paragraph 4 of Article 2, and the fundamental principle prohibiting the resort to force in international relations.”
In response, Iran said its military actions were conducted within the framework of international law and were aimed at defending the country’s sovereignty.
The ministry said Iran responded to US military aggression under its legitimate right to self-defense as outlined in Article 51 of the UN Charter.
Highlighting its retaliatory measures, the statement added that “the armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran targeted and struck U.S. bases in the region that served as the launch points for these aggressions,” while condemning what it described as the “American regime’s crime in its military aggression against Iran.”
Amid the escalating conflict, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held separate telephone conversations overnight with his counterparts in Saudi Arabia and Turkey to discuss regional developments, according to Iran’s IRNA news agency.
The discussions focused on the latest security situation in the region. During the calls, Araghchi condemned the US military action and what Tehran described as violations of Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The foreign minister also reiterated Iran’s position that it has the right to self-defense and to respond militarily to attacks against its territory.
The diplomatic outreach came as Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) expanded its military response by launching a drone attack against the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain, according to Iran’s Tasnim News Agency.
Tasnim reported that “IRGC Navy forces launched a drone attack at 2:30 a.m. against the U.S. Fifth Fleet in Bahrain,” citing an official IRGC statement.
The statement warned that if US military operations continue, Washington would face more severe consequences.
The IRGC also outlined its account of the impact of US strikes in southern Iran, claiming that American forces targeted multiple locations in Jask, Sirik, and Qeshm.
According to Iranian media reports, the strikes damaged a telecommunications mast in Sirik and destroyed two water tanks in the city. The agency added that clashes were continuing.
The drone attack on Bahrain came hours after US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that US Air Force and Navy fighter jets had struck Iranian air defense installations, ground control stations, and surveillance radar sites near the Strait of Hormuz using precision-guided munitions.
CENTCOM described the operation as “a proportional response to recent attacks on U.S. forces and international commercial ships transiting regional waters” and stated that US forces “remain vigilant and postured to defend against unjustified Iranian aggression.”
The American strikes were launched after Iran downed a US Army AH-64 Apache helicopter near the coast of Oman on Monday.
CENTCOM said both crew members were successfully rescued and remain in stable condition.
Before the latest military exchanges, Araghchi had warned Washington that Iran’s armed forces would leave “no attack or threat unanswered.”
In a post on X, he wrote, “Leave our region if you want to be safe.”
The drone strike marked the first time during the current phase of the conflict that the IRGC directly targeted the headquarters of the US Fifth Fleet in Manama, Bahrain.
The Fifth Fleet oversees American naval operations throughout the Middle East, including the Persian Gulf, Red Sea, and Arabian Sea.
The military confrontation between the United States and Iran has continued since late February 2026, when the US and Israel launched coordinated strikes against Iran under Operation Epic Fury. (ANI)
