TEHRAN, June 10 (ANI) — An explosion was reported near Qeshm Island in southern Iran on Wednesday, according to the country’s Mehr News Agency.
Providing preliminary details, the news agency said that “the exact nature of these sounds is still unknown.”
The incident followed a night of intense military exchanges across the region.
Linking the explosion to the ongoing conflict, Mehr reported that “Hormozgan province and the Persian Gulf coastline have been under attack by the American enemy since the early hours of this morning, which has been met with a swift response from our country’s armed forces.”
The reported blast comes amid claims by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) regarding the impact of recent US military strikes in southern Iran.
“The warmongering U.S. regime attacked several points in Jask, Sirik and Qeshm early this morning under false pretexts, damaging a telecommunications mast in Sirik and destroying two water tanks in the city,” the IRGC said, according to Iranian media reports, adding that clashes were continuing.
Earlier Wednesday, the conflict expanded further when the IRGC launched a retaliatory drone attack against the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain, according to Iran’s Tasnim News Agency.
Tasnim reported that “IRGC Navy forces launched a drone attack at 2:30 a.m. against the U.S. Fifth Fleet in Bahrain,” citing an official IRGC statement that warned of more severe consequences if what it described as US aggression continues.
The escalation came hours after US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that US Air Force and Navy fighter jets had struck Iranian air defense installations, ground control stations, and surveillance radar sites near the Strait of Hormuz using precision-guided munitions.
CENTCOM described the operation as “a proportional response to recent attacks on U.S. forces and international commercial ships transiting regional waters” and said US forces “remain vigilant and postured to defend against unjustified Iranian aggression.”
The US strikes followed Iran’s downing of a US Army AH-64 Apache helicopter near the coast of Oman on Monday.
CENTCOM said both crew members were successfully rescued and remain in stable condition.
Before the latest military exchanges, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi warned that Tehran’s armed forces would leave “no attack or threat unanswered.”
In a post on X, Araghchi wrote, “Leave our region if you want to be safe.”
The drone strike marked the first time during the current phase of the conflict that the IRGC directly targeted the headquarters of the US Fifth Fleet in Manama, Bahrain, which oversees American naval operations throughout the Middle East, including the Persian Gulf, Red Sea, and Arabian Sea.
The direct military confrontation between the United States and Iran has continued since late February 2026, when the US and Israel launched coordinated strikes against Iran under Operation Epic Fury. (ANI)
