NEW DELHI, June 23 (ANI) — Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is expected to make her first official visit to India from July 1-3, with the trip now likely to be centered in New Delhi.
Sources said Tuesday that logistical considerations have prompted discussions on holding the visit in the national capital rather than elsewhere in the country.
Apart from New Delhi, Guwahati had also been considered as a possible venue and was offered to the Japanese side, according to the sources.
“Given Prime Minister Takaichi’s domestic commitments, the window between her proposed arrival in India and departure is quite tight. In view of this and the additional logistical issues connected to a visit outside the capital, the visit is likely to be held in Delhi,” the sources said.
They added that hosting the visit in New Delhi would also accommodate several programming elements that both countries are keen to include as part of efforts to strengthen bilateral ties.
Last week, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said there was a possibility that the Japanese prime minister could visit Guwahati on July 1 for summit-level talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In a post on X, Sarma said, “There is a possibility of Hon’ble Prime Minister of Japan, H.E. Sanae Takaichi, visiting Guwahati from July 1 to hold summit-level talks with Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi in Guwahati.”
Japanese media recently reported that Takaichi is scheduled to visit Assam in early July and will be accompanied by representatives from more than 50 Japanese companies and organizations, according to a June 18 report by Nikkei.
Meanwhile, a report by NHK said that during her meeting with Modi, the two leaders are expected to discuss concrete measures for cooperation across a range of sectors, including security and the economy. The discussions are expected to build on the Japan-India joint vision for the next decade announced during Modi’s visit to Japan last year.
During their meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France earlier this month, Modi emphasized that India and Japan would continue to deepen cooperation across diverse sectors, with trade and investment remaining key priorities.
Takaichi, a protégé of the late former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, is Japan’s first female prime minister.
Notably, Abe had been scheduled to visit Guwahati for summit talks with Modi in December 2019, but the trip was later postponed. (ANI)
