NEW DELHI, June 23 (ANI) — Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman held discussions with a delegation led by U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in New Delhi on Tuesday as both countries continued efforts to strengthen bilateral trade and economic cooperation.
The discussions focused on expanding growth opportunities, enhancing commercial engagement, and advancing negotiations on a bilateral trade agreement between India and the United States.
The U.S. Embassy in India described the U.S.-India trade partnership as a “win-win” relationship, saying stronger economic ties create manufacturing jobs in the United States while supporting India’s growth as the world’s largest democracy.
“From energy security to tech talent exchanges, we’re building the future together,” the embassy said in a post on X.
U.S. Ambassador Sergio Gor also highlighted the meeting with Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal.
“Great to be with Minister Piyush Goyal and U.S. Trade Representative Ambassador Greer today in New Delhi. Ongoing discussions on finalizing the trade deal between the U.S. and India,” Gor said in a post on X.
In an earlier post, Gor welcomed Greer to India and said completion of the bilateral trade agreement would “unlock new economic opportunities for both countries and significantly deepen the U.S.-India economic partnership.”
The high-level discussions are centered on an interim agreement that forms part of broader negotiations for a Bilateral Trade Agreement between the two nations.
Last week, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said negotiations on the interim trade pact had made significant progress.
“With the United States, we have made significant progress already on the conclusion of an interim free trade bilateral trade agreement,” Misri said following the G7 Summit. He added that Greer’s visit to New Delhi was expected to further advance trade discussions.
Earlier, Goyal welcomed Greer, Gor, and the U.S. delegation to the Department of Commerce for what he described as productive discussions on the bilateral trade agreement.
India remains engaged with the United States on proposed tariff measures under Section 301 proceedings while simultaneously working toward finalizing a broader bilateral trade framework.
Following his meetings in India, Greer is scheduled to travel to Tashkent, Uzbekistan, where he will discuss fair, balanced, and reciprocal trade with counterparts, according to the Office of the United States Trade Representative. (ANI)
