Washington [US], July 29 (ANI): U.S. President Donald Trump has denied reports suggesting he is seeking a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, asserting that he is not actively pursuing such a meeting, The Hill reported on Tuesday.
“The Fake News is reporting that I am SEEKING a ‘Summit’ with President Xi of China. This is not correct, I am not SEEKING anything!” Trump stated on his Truth Social account.
He further addressed the speculation regarding a potential visit to China.
“I may go to China, but it would only be at the invitation of President Xi, which has been extended. Otherwise, no interest! Thank you for your attention to this matter,” he added.
Trump’s remarks come as senior officials from both countries participate in ongoing trade negotiations in Stockholm. This marks the third round of talks aimed at resolving tariff disputes between the two global powers. The U.S. delegation is being led by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, The Hill noted.
The talks are part of efforts to extend a temporary tariff truce established in earlier agreements from May and June, which paused the imposition of triple-digit tariffs. The current deadline for this truce is August 12. For other trading partners, Trump has set a separate tariff resumption deadline of August 1, according to the report.
Despite recent diplomatic progress, Trump’s latest statements reflect a cautious and reserved tone. However, the outcome of the Stockholm discussions could pave the way for a potential future meeting between Trump and Xi.
“We have a good relationship with China,” Trump said on Monday. “China’s tough,” he remarked, commenting on the broader dynamics of the U.S.-China trade relationship.
Last month, Trump had described President Xi as “extremely hard to make a deal” with, underscoring the complexity and often tense nature of their interactions over the years, The Hill noted.
