Washington, D.C. [US], August 4 (ANI): U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday (local time) reiterated his commitment to reducing pharmaceutical drug prices through the Most Favored Nation (MFN) prescription drug pricing plan. Speaking to reporters before boarding Air Force One in Allentown, Pennsylvania, Trump emphasized that the United States should pay no more than the lowest prices paid by other countries.
“We want the same price as Europe gets. We want the same price as other countries get… We will pay as low as the lowest nation in the world,” Trump said.
“The next big move is going to be the price of drugs because you could buy something in London or in Germany… sometimes one-tenth the price of what it costs to buy it in New York. We’re not doing that anymore,” he added.
Trump has been ramping up pressure on major pharmaceutical companies to align U.S. drug prices with the significantly lower prices available in other nations. However, according to CNN, industry experts remain skeptical that drugmakers will comply.
Earlier on Thursday, Trump sent letters to the CEOs of 17 major pharmaceutical companies, listing demands that include extending MFN pricing—the lowest price paid for a drug in any comparable country—to all medications provided to Medicaid enrollees. The president gave the companies 60 days to comply.
This initiative is part of an executive order Trump signed in May, which directs drugmakers to reduce U.S. prices or face consequences.
In addition, Trump defended his tariff policy, claiming it would help reduce national debt.
“We’re going to pay down debt. We have a lot of money coming in, much more money than the country’s ever seen—by hundreds of billions of dollars… We should’ve done this many years ago,” he said. (ANI)
