Pithoragarh (Uttarakhand) [India], November 25 (ANI): The 19th edition of the joint military exercise “Exercise Suryakiran XIX – 2025” commenced today in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand, the Ministry of Defence said in a statement. The exercise will run from November 25 to December 8.
The Indian contingent, comprising 334 personnel, is represented primarily by troops from the Assam Regiment. The Nepalese contingent, also consisting of 334 personnel, is represented mainly by troops from the Devi Datta Regiment.
The exercise aims to jointly rehearse sub-conventional operations under Chapter VII of the United Nations mandate. Its scope includes strengthening battalion-level synergy in jungle warfare, counterterrorism operations in mountainous terrain, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, medical response, environmental conservation, and integrated ground–aviation operations.
This edition of Suryakiran will focus on incorporating niche and emerging technologies such as unmanned aerial systems, drone-based ISR, AI-enabled decision-support tools, unmanned logistic vehicles, and armoured protection platforms. These tools will help both armies refine and adapt tactics, techniques, and procedures for counterterrorism operations in alignment with contemporary global dynamics.
Collective efforts will center on boosting interoperability between troops and reducing risks to life and property while prioritizing the United Nations’ objectives during peacekeeping operations. Both sides will exchange views and conduct joint drills across a wide range of combat skills, allowing participants to learn from one another. Sharing best practices is expected to enhance defence cooperation between the Indian Army and the Nepal Army.
The exercise will also contribute to strengthening bilateral relations between the two neighbouring countries, the statement added.
In a post on X, the Indian Army said, “The opening ceremony of the 19th edition of the annual bilateral Exercise SURYAKIRAN between the Indian Army and the Nepali Army was held at Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand. The exercise is scheduled to be conducted from 25 November to 8 December 2025.” (ANI)
