Dhaka [Bangladesh], December 4 (ANI): Bangladesh’s International Crime Tribunal (ICT) on Thursday issued an arrest warrant against Sajeeb Wazed Joy, son of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, on charges of committing crimes against humanity by shutting down the internet during student-led anti-government protests in July 2024.
The ICT-1, headed by Justice Golam Mortaza, delivered the order. The tribunal also includes Justice Md. Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Justice Md. Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury. Allegations against former State Minister for Information Technology Junaid Ahmed Palak were also considered in this case.
“An arrest warrant has been issued against him (Sajeeb Wazed Joy) for crimes against humanity. He shut down the internet during the protests as a means of repression,” Tajul Islam, Chief Prosecutor of the ICT, told ANI.
Earlier this week, a Dhaka court sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to five years in prison on corruption charges. Sheikh Rehana, Hasina’s younger sister, received a seven-year sentence, while Rehana’s daughter, British MP Tulip Siddique, was sentenced to two years.
The Special Judge – 4, Rabiul Alam, announced Sheikh Hasina’s verdict in a plot fraud case. The Bangladesh Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) had filed six separate cases against Sheikh Hasina and her family last January, alleging illegal allocation of government plots in the Purbachal area of Dhaka.
Previously, the ICT sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death for the killing of students during last year’s protests. Sheikh Hasina and Sajeeb Wazed Joy have rejected the tribunal’s process, calling it a kangaroo court. Sheikh Hasina fled to India on August 5 last year during the student-led uprising, while Sajeeb Wazed Joy currently resides in the United States.
The interim government led by Muhammad Yunus has initiated trials against Sheikh Hasina and her family members. (ANI)
