TEHRAN, Iran, June 2 (ANI) — Iran’s Foreign Ministry has sharply criticized the European Union for condemning Tehran’s strikes against military facilities in Kuwait, describing the bloc’s position as “hypocritical, reckless, and a masterclass in selective moral outrage.”
Defending Iran’s actions, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said Monday that the strikes were a lawful exercise of self-defense in response to what Tehran described as U.S. military aggression launched from bases in neighboring countries.
In a statement posted on X, Baqaei accused the European Union of applying double standards in its response to the conflict.
“The EU’s statement blaming Iran for exercising its right to self-defense against U.S. aggression launched from bases in neighboring countries is a masterclass in selective moral outrage; it is hypocritical and reckless,” Baqaei said.
“The EU must remain faithful to the rule of law and the principles of the U.N. Charter that it has long claimed to uphold. It must stop appeasing aggressors while blaming those who respond to unlawful attacks,” he added.
Baqaei further argued that Iran’s military actions were consistent with international law.
“Iran’s strikes against those bases and assets that are used to launch unlawful attacks against Iran are a lawful exercise of self-defense. States have an established legal obligation not to allow their territory or assets to be used for invading other countries,” he said.
The remarks came in response to a statement issued by the European Union on May 29 condemning Iran’s strike on Kuwait and expressing solidarity with the Kuwaiti government and people.
“The EU strongly condemns the latest attack by Iran against the State of Kuwait, violating its sovereignty according to international law, and reiterates its full solidarity with the Government and people of Kuwait,” the statement said.
“Such attacks pose a serious threat to regional security and stability,” it added.
The 27-member bloc also called on all parties to comply with international law, international humanitarian law, and the principles of the United Nations Charter.
The European Union further emphasized the importance of implementing U.N. Security Council Resolution 2817, which urges Iran to cease attacks against Gulf states and Jordan.
“The EU will continue to support all efforts toward de-escalation and advocate for a sustainable solution regarding the war between the U.S., Israel, and Iran,” the statement said. (ANI)
