New Delhi, January 25 (ANI) — India is set to host the 16th EU-India Summit on January 27, where leaders are expected to adopt a joint EU-India comprehensive strategic agenda and strengthen regional and multilateral cooperation.
“At the summit, leaders are expected to adopt a joint EU-India comprehensive strategic agenda to reinforce the strategic partnership and deepen cooperation, delivering stability and prosperity at home and beyond,” the European External Action Service (EEAS) said in a post on X.
European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will represent the European Union at the summit, which will be hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to a statement from the European Council.
Costa was quoted as saying, “India is a crucial partner for the EU. Together, we share the capacity and responsibility to protect the rules-based international order.”
The summit will provide an opportunity to build on the EU-India strategic partnership and further strengthen collaboration across key policy areas, including trade, security and defense, the clean transition, and people-to-people cooperation. Costa and von der Leyen will also attend India’s 77th Republic Day celebrations on January 26 as guests of honor.
The summit takes place against the backdrop of positive momentum in EU-India relations in recent years and sustained high-level engagement across all domains. In October 2025, the Council of the EU endorsed a new strategic EU-India agenda aimed at further developing bilateral ties.
Leaders are expected to discuss trade in the context of ongoing negotiations for a free-trade agreement, first initiated in 2007 and relaunched in 2022, which could boost bilateral trade and investment ties and drive shared prosperity.
The agenda will also focus on closer collaboration between the EU and India on security and defense, particularly in establishing a security and defense partnership. Additionally, leaders will discuss regional and global matters, including the importance of an effective multilateral system, a free and prosperous Indo-Pacific region, Russia’s war against Ukraine, and the situation in the Middle East.
