NEW DELHI, June 24 (ANI) — Bangladesh has become the latest country to join the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA), the organization announced on Wednesday.
In a post on X, the IBCA welcomed Bangladesh as its newest member and said the move marks an important step in strengthening international cooperation for the conservation of big cats and their habitats.
“The International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) warmly welcomes the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh as its newest member country. This important milestone strengthens international cooperation for the conservation of big cats and their habitats and reinforces our shared commitment to safeguarding these iconic species and the ecosystems they inhabit for future generations,” the organization said.
The IBCA was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2023 during the event commemorating 50 years of Project Tiger.
On Feb. 29, 2024, the Union Cabinet approved the establishment of the alliance, with its headquarters located in India.
The initiative was created to promote the conservation of seven major big cat species — the tiger, lion, leopard, snow leopard, cheetah, jaguar, and puma. Membership is open to all United Nations member states, including range countries where these species are found and non-range countries interested in supporting big cat conservation efforts.
According to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, the alliance is a multi-country, multi-agency coalition that includes big cat range countries, non-range countries, conservation partners, scientific organizations involved in big cat research, and private-sector entities committed to supporting conservation initiatives.
The alliance’s primary objective is to foster collaboration among stakeholders and create a centralized repository of successful conservation practices, expertise, and research.
According to the organization’s official website, the coordinated approach is designed to strengthen global conservation efforts, halt the decline of big cat populations, and reverse existing trends through enhanced cooperation and financial support.
The IBCA aims to serve as a global platform that brings together range countries and other stakeholders to advance the cause of big cat conservation worldwide. (ANI)
