WASHINGTON, D.C., May 31 — U.S. President Donald Trump indicated that a peace agreement with Iran may be within reach, while emphasizing that military action remains an option if negotiations fail. He said any agreement must include guarantees preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
In an interview with Fox News, Trump said, “We are making a great deal; otherwise, we’ll just go back and finish it off militarily. We’re close to a very good deal, and if we can make it good, otherwise we just start up with the Department of War.”
Trump drew comparisons to past military operations, including in Venezuela, describing them as “one-day wins,” but said he hopes to avoid military escalation if a satisfactory agreement can be reached. He also referred to the possibility of immediate benefits following a deal, including the reopening of strategic waterways.
Speaking about Iran, Trump reiterated his position on weakening the country’s military capabilities and said, “We’ve essentially defeated their military. I would rather get a deal because we can open the strait immediately upon signing. The one guarantee that I have is that there will be no nuclear weapons. They’ve agreed to that.”
Trump described the negotiations as difficult but said progress was being made.
“We’re getting what we want slowly. Very tough negotiators. It takes a long time. I’m in no hurry. If you’re going to be in a hurry, you’re not going to make a good deal,” he told Fox News.
He also reiterated that the United States is prepared to pursue alternative measures if negotiations do not produce the desired outcome.
“Slowly but surely we’re getting what we want—and if we don’t get what we want, we’re going to end it a different way,” Trump said.
His remarks come amid a report by Axios, citing a senior administration official and another source briefed on the matter, that Trump requested several amendments to a proposed peace agreement negotiated by U.S. envoys and their Iranian counterparts during a Situation Room meeting on Friday.
According to the report, Trump wants to strengthen several provisions that he considers important, particularly those related to Iran’s nuclear materials, according to two U.S. officials. The revisions have reportedly triggered another round of negotiations between the parties that could continue for several days.
The report also stated that Trump wants changes to some of the language concerning the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, according to a source familiar with the discussions. (ANI)
