‘Commitment to Work Together for Global South’: PM Modi Thanks South African President for Birthday Wishes

New Delhi [India], September 18 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday thanked South African President Cyril Ramaphosa for his warm birthday greetings, reaffirming the strong partnership between India and South Africa and their shared commitment to advancing the interests of the Global South.

“Thank you for your kind wishes, President Cyril Ramaphosa. India and South Africa are steadfast partners with a shared commitment to work together for the Global South,” PM Modi wrote in a post on X, responding to the South African leader’s message.

President Ramaphosa extended greetings to PM Modi on his 75th birthday, praising his leadership and the enduring ties between the two nations. “Allow me to extend my warmest wishes to Your Excellency PM Narendra Modi on the occasion of your 75th birthday. May this year be prosperous in both your personal and professional endeavors,” he said.

He expressed confidence that the bond of solidarity and friendship between South Africa and India would continue to flourish under PM Modi’s leadership. “It is my firm hope that the strong bond of solidarity and friendship between South Africa and India will continue to flourish under your inspirational leadership,” Ramaphosa added. He also wished the Prime Minister good health and success in his role.

India and South Africa share a historic and strategic relationship, strengthened by cooperation in multilateral forums such as BRICS, the G20, and the India-Africa Forum. India’s ties with South Africa’s struggle for freedom and justice date back to Mahatma Gandhi’s Satyagraha movement, which began there over a century ago, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.

India was among the earliest voices against apartheid, severing trade relations with the regime in 1946 and later imposing a complete embargo on diplomatic, commercial, cultural, and sports ties with South Africa. New Delhi also pushed for international sanctions against apartheid at the United Nations and other multilateral bodies.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, US President Donald Trump, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also conveyed their best wishes to PM Modi on his birthday. The Prime Minister said later that he was overwhelmed by the outpouring of greetings from India and abroad. (ANI)
