Kabul [Afghanistan], December 1 (ANI): An earthquake of magnitude 4.4 struck Afghanistan on Monday, according to a statement from the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The quake occurred at a depth of 163 kilometers.
In a post on X, the NCS stated: “EQ of M: 4.4, On: 01/12/2025 10:21:04 IST, Lat: 36.57 N, Long: 71.11 E, Depth: 163 Km, Location: Afghanistan.”
Earlier in the day, an earthquake of magnitude 4.3 struck the country at a depth of 90 kilometers. The NCS noted: “EQ of M: 4.3, On: 01/12/2025 07:36:15 IST, Lat: 36.70 N, Long: 71.51 E, Depth: 90 Km, Location: Afghanistan.”
On November 4, a powerful earthquake rattled northern Afghanistan, killing at least 27 people and injuring 956 others, according to Sharafat Zaman Amar. The tremor also damaged one of the country’s most beautiful mosques, CNN reported.
Families were jolted awake in the early hours that Monday when the 6.3-magnitude quake struck near Mazar-i-Sharif, one of the most populated cities in northern Afghanistan, at a shallow depth of 28 kilometers, the United States Geological Survey said, as per CNN.
Afghanistan has long been prone to powerful earthquakes. The Hindu Kush mountain range is a geologically active zone where quakes occur frequently, according to the Red Cross. The country sits on several major fault lines located between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, including one that runs directly through Herat. These plate interactions make Afghanistan one of the most seismically active regions in the world.
According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), Afghanistan remains highly vulnerable to natural disasters, including seasonal flooding, landslides, and earthquakes. These frequent seismic events often strike communities already burdened by decades of conflict and underdevelopment, leaving them with limited resilience to withstand multiple shocks, UNOCHA noted.
