ATLANTA, Georgia, June 28 (ANI) — The Democratic Republic of Congo scripted a historic night in Atlanta, coming from behind to defeat Uzbekistan 3-1 and secure their first-ever FIFA World Cup win along with a place in the knockout stage of the 2026 tournament.
Uzbekistan made a dream start and thought they had taken the lead after just 20 seconds when captain Eldor Shomurodov found the net, but the goal was disallowed for offside following a VAR review.
The White Wolves remained undeterred and broke the deadlock in the 10th minute after a defensive mix-up between Aaron Wan-Bissaka and goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi allowed Shomurodov to score from a tight angle with a composed finish.
DR Congo gradually grew into the match and briefly believed they had equalised midway through the first half through a long-range strike from Nathanaël Mbuku, but VAR ruled it out due to a foul in the build-up.
Despite dominating possession, the African side went into halftime trailing as they struggled to convert control into clear chances.
The Leopards returned with greater urgency after the break and levelled the score just before the hour mark when Yoane Wissa converted a penalty after being fouled by Uzbekistan defender Abdukodir Khusanov.
Momentum shifted decisively in DR Congo’s favour, and their pressure paid off in the 78th minute when substitutes combined to create the winner. Meschak Elia’s attempt deflected into the path of Fiston Mayele, who guided it into the net to put Congo ahead.
Wissa then sealed the victory with his second goal late in the match, finishing clinically from the edge of the box to complete a memorable comeback.
The result sparked jubilant celebrations at Mercedes-Benz Stadium as DR Congo sealed a landmark qualification for the Round of 32, where they will face England. Uzbekistan exited the tournament after their debut campaign, having gained valuable experience on the global stage.
