MONTERREY, Mexico, June 20 — The FIFA World Cup will reach a historic milestone on Saturday when Tunisia faces Japan in the tournament’s 1,000th match.
From the inaugural matches of the 1930 World Cup to the ongoing 2026 edition, the tournament has produced countless memorable moments featuring some of the greatest teams and players in football history.
The First-Ever FIFA World Cup Matches (1930)
On July 13, 1930, two matches simultaneously earned the distinction of being the first FIFA World Cup games. The United States defeated Belgium 3-0 at Parque Central in Montevideo, while France beat Mexico 4-1 at Estadio de los Pocitos.
The United States advanced to the semifinals and finished third overall. France’s match produced the tournament’s first-ever goal when Lucien Laurent scored in the 19th minute against Mexico. Despite the opening victory, France failed to advance after losses to Argentina and Chile.
The 100th FIFA World Cup Match (1954)
The tournament’s 100th match took place during the third-place playoff of the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland. Austria defeated Uruguay 3-1 at Hardturm Stadium in Zurich after both teams had fallen in the semifinals.
The 200th FIFA World Cup Match (1966)
The 200th match coincided with one of the most famous finals in World Cup history. England defeated Germany 4-2 at Wembley Stadium in London to claim its first World Cup title.
Geoff Hurst scored a historic hat trick, becoming the first player to achieve the feat in a World Cup final. The record stood until France’s Kylian Mbappe scored three goals in the 2022 final against Argentina.
The 300th FIFA World Cup Match (1978)
The 300th match milestone was shared by two second-round Group A matches played simultaneously. Italy defeated Austria 1-0, while Germany and the Netherlands played to a 2-2 draw.
The Netherlands eventually reached the final before losing to host nation Argentina, while Italy later fell to Brazil in the third-place match.
The 400th FIFA World Cup Match (1986)
Argentina’s 1-0 victory over Uruguay in Puebla, Mexico, became the 400th World Cup match. Pedro Pasculli scored the game’s only goal.
The victory formed part of Argentina’s march to the title, with Diego Maradona inspiring the team to triumph over England, Belgium, and West Germany en route to its second World Cup championship.
The 500th FIFA World Cup Match (1994)
The milestone was reached through two Group D matches played simultaneously. Nigeria defeated Greece 2-0 in Boston, while Bulgaria stunned Argentina 2-0 in Dallas.
Argentina was without Maradona, who had been suspended following a failed drug test. Nigeria, Bulgaria, and Argentina all advanced to the Round of 16, while Bulgaria eventually reached the third-place match.
The 600th FIFA World Cup Match (2002)
France and Uruguay played to a scoreless draw in Busan, South Korea, in the 600th World Cup match.
It remains the only milestone match to finish without a goal. The result represented France’s lone point during a disappointing title defense, as the reigning champions exited in the group stage without scoring.
The 700th FIFA World Cup Match (2006)
France defeated Spain 3-1 in a Round of 16 match in Hanover, Germany.
