Los Angeles, June 16 (ANI): There were four draws on a single day at the FIFA World Cup for the first time since June 15, 1958, when eight matches were played, according to The Athletic.
In the first fixture of the day, debutants Cape Verde produced one of the biggest upsets of the ongoing FIFA World Cup, holding world No. 2 Spain and European champions to a goalless draw in a strong defensive display at Atlanta on Monday.
In the second match, Egypt were denied their first-ever World Cup win despite a quick strike from Emam Ashour, as Romelu Lukaku forced an own-goal equaliser shortly after coming on, with Belgium drawing 1-1 in Seattle on Tuesday.
In the third fixture, an 80th-minute equaliser from Maximiliano Araújo helped Uruguay secure a 1-1 draw against Saudi Arabia in Miami. With this result, Spain, Cape Verde, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia are all level on one point in Group H.
In the final match of the day, Iran held New Zealand to a 2-2 draw in a thrilling Group G encounter at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.
Iran will return to Los Angeles to face Belgium, while New Zealand take on Egypt in Vancouver in their next group-stage matches on Sunday.
New Zealand, appearing at their third World Cup, are still searching for their first-ever win in the tournament after seven matches, while Iran continue their push for a first-ever knockout stage qualification.
