Jammu (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], July 31 (ANI): People’s Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday reacted sharply to the recent verdict in the 2008 Malegaon blast case, in which all the accused were acquitted by a National Investigation Agency (NIA) court. She alleged that it feels like “Godse’s Constitution” is now in effect in the country and accused the ruling BJP of undermining the rule of law.
Speaking to ANI, Mufti criticized the BJP for what she described as celebratory reactions to the acquittal. “The new norm is that there is no rule of law anywhere. The BJP is distributing sweets for the acquittal of a woman who shot at Mahatma Gandhi’s photo. It seems that Godse’s Constitution is currently in effect in the country. These people have destroyed Babasaheb Ambedkar’s Constitution,” she said.
Mufti went on to draw parallels between the Malegaon verdict celebrations and the BJP’s reaction to the release of the convicts in the Bilkis Bano case. “The way the BJP is celebrating now is exactly how they celebrated when the rapists of Bilkis Bano were released. Godse was the biggest terrorist. He was the first terrorist. What can be a bigger example than this of who the terrorists are?” she added.
She also commented on U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent remarks criticizing India’s economy and trade policies. Mufti linked India’s rising defense expenditure with economic strain. “We are spending all our budget on defense… It is sucking us dry. The money we are spending on maintaining enmity with Pakistan has weakened our country’s economy. After Operation Sindoor, all we hear is what weapons we bought. When all our money is being spent on this, the economy will definitely go down,” she stated.
President Trump, in a post on Truth Social earlier today, dismissed concerns over India’s relations with Russia and made sharp remarks about India’s economy. “I don’t care what India does with Russia. They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care,” he wrote. Trump also criticized India’s high tariffs and called for trade penalties.
Responding to Trump’s comments, Mufti said India’s foreign policy has become an extension of its domestic political strategy aimed at voter appeasement. “During Operation Sindoor, our Chief of Defence Staff himself said we were fighting both Pakistan and China. But no one mentioned China’s name in Parliament. Our leadership must realize that our domestic policy cannot be our foreign policy. They’ve turned their vote-pleasing domestic agenda into foreign policy. That’s why Trump, whom we respected so much, has attacked our country the most,” she said.
Mufti’s remarks come amid escalating political tensions and criticism over recent judicial and diplomatic developments.
