
Guwahati (Assam) [India], June 1 (ANI): The Assam government announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 4 lakh to the families of five people who lost their lives in landslides in Guwahati caused by heavy rainfall. Jayanta Mallabaruah, Assam’s Public Health Engineering Minister and Housing & Urban Affairs Minister, made the announcement after meeting with the Kamrup (Metro) district administration and officials to review the flood situation and ongoing relief efforts. The meeting was attended by officials including Guwahati Municipal Corporation mayor Mrigen Sarania and District Commissioner Sumit Sattawan.
Parts of Sribhumi in Guwahati experienced flood-like conditions with water entering residential areas. Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the flood situation in the Northeast and spoke with the Chief Ministers of Assam, Manipur, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh, assuring them of full central government support to manage the heavy rainfall. Shah emphasized that the Modi government stands firmly in support of the people of the Northeast.
Ferry services between Majuli and Nimati were suspended due to rising Brahmaputra water levels caused by the heavy rain. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued red and orange alerts for five districts—South Salmara Mancachar, Karimganj, Hailakandi, Cachar, and Dima Hasao—warning of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds.
