New Delhi [India], May 2 (ANI): Several parts of Delhi experienced heavy rainfall in the early hours of Friday, leading to widespread waterlogging, slowed traffic, and disruptions in air travel. The sudden downpour brought much-needed respite from the sweltering heat but also caused significant inconvenience to commuters and residents.
The heavy rains, accompanied by strong winds, created challenging conditions on the roads. Visuals from Khanpur in South Delhi showed vehicles struggling through knee-deep water, while Major Somnath Marg in RK Puram reported multiple instances of uprooted trees blocking roadways and further impeding traffic flow.
Amid the inclement weather, Delhi Airport issued an advisory alerting passengers to flight delays. “Due to inclement weather conditions and thunderstorms in Delhi, some flights have been impacted at Delhi Airport. Our on-ground teams are diligently working with all stakeholders to ensure a seamless and efficient passenger experience. Passengers are requested to contact the airline concerned for updated flight information,” the advisory stated, posted via the airport’s official X account.
Commuters across the city were caught in the chaos, with reports of slow-moving traffic and stranded vehicles emerging from various areas. At Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg, Mukesh, a daily commuter en route to his office in Laxmi Nagar, told ANI, “The rain has brought much-needed relief from the heat, but I’ve been stuck here since 5 a.m. due to traffic. An accident just occurred nearby. There’s no waterlogging at this spot, but I encountered it near the Connaught Place flyover.”
Another commuter, Somvir, who was traveling from the direction of Minto Bridge, said, “This rainfall is a relief, but it has become quite chilly. There’s waterlogging at the underpass. Motorbikes and auto-rickshaws are breaking down in that area, so we had to turn back.”
The adverse weather also impacted school children and office-goers, many of whom were seen struggling to board buses in the middle of waterlogged streets and congested junctions.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert for Delhi-NCR, warning of ongoing severe weather conditions. Residents are advised to remain indoors wherever possible and exercise caution during travel.
The capital’s civic agencies and emergency response teams are working to address waterlogging and traffic congestion, but delays and disruptions are likely to persist until the rain subsides.
