India elected to UN for 2026-2028

New York [US], October 15 (ANI): India has been elected for the seventh time to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the 2026-28 term, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Parvathaneni Harish, announced on Wednesday.

In a post on X, Harish expressed gratitude to all delegations for their support and highlighted that the election reflects India’s “unwavering commitment to human rights and fundamental freedoms.” He stated, “India was elected to the Human Rights Council for the term 2026-28 @UN for the seventh time today. Thank all delegations for their overwhelming support. This election reflects India’s unwavering commitment to human rights and fundamental freedoms. We look forward to serve this objective during our tenure.”

The Human Rights Council, established by the UN General Assembly in 2006, is the primary intergovernmental body responsible for promoting and protecting human rights globally. Comprising 47 Member States, the Council addresses human rights violations, responds to emergencies, and provides recommendations to improve human rights implementation worldwide.

The Permanent Mission of India to the UN emphasized that the election reflects India’s deep engagement with the UN and its steadfast support for multilateralism and dialogue as tools to address global challenges. India, a founding UN member, has contributed significantly to the organisation’s goals, specialised programmes, and agencies.

India reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with all Member States in the spirit of multilateralism to achieve equitable solutions on global issues, including peacebuilding, sustainable development, climate change, terrorism, disarmament, human rights, health crises, migration, cybersecurity, outer space, emerging technologies, and the pursuit of reformed multilateral frameworks.
