DHAKA, Bangladesh, June 25 (ANI) — Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi on Thursday presented his credentials to Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin at Bangabhaban, the presidential palace in Dhaka.
The newly appointed Indian envoy was welcomed with a ceremonial reception, including a guard of honor, before formally presenting his credentials to the president.
During the meeting, President Shahabuddin welcomed Trivedi to Bangladesh and expressed confidence that he would contribute to strengthening bilateral relations during his tenure.
After presenting his credentials, Trivedi was scheduled to visit the Indian Visa Application Centre (IVAC) at Jamuna Future Park to review visa operations. He is also expected to briefly interact with the media following the visit.
Trivedi arrived in Dhaka by road on June 12, entering Bangladesh through the Petrapole-Benapole border crossing.
He succeeds Pranay Kumar Verma, who served as India’s high commissioner to Bangladesh for four years until May 2026.
The Ministry of External Affairs announced Trivedi’s appointment as India’s next envoy to Bangladesh on April 27. He formally received his Letters of Credence from President Droupadi Murmu on June 5 before assuming the assignment.
Ahead of taking charge in Dhaka, Trivedi visited Netaji Bhavan in Kolkata, where he expressed confidence that India and Bangladesh would continue to strengthen ties based on shared aspirations, democratic values, and strong people-to-people connections.
A veteran politician, Trivedi brings extensive administrative and parliamentary experience to the diplomatic role. He previously served as India’s Minister for Railways and as Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare in the government led by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Trivedi also represented West Bengal in both houses of Parliament and served as a Member of Parliament from the Barrackpore constituency from 2009 to 2019.
Recognized for his legislative work, he received the Outstanding Parliamentarian Award for 2016-17 and chaired several parliamentary bodies, including the Indo-European Union Parliamentary Forum.
In 2021, Trivedi joined the Bharatiya Janata Party after resigning from the All India Trinamool Congress.
His appointment comes at a significant time as India and Bangladesh seek to deepen cooperation across a range of strategic, economic, and regional sectors. (ANI)
