Maputo [Mozambique], September 17 (ANI): The First Training Squadron (1TS) of the Indian Navy, comprising INS Tir, INS Shardul, INS Sujata, and ICGS Sarathi, arrived in Maputo on Tuesday, marking a significant milestone in India-Mozambique maritime cooperation. The squadron was warmly received by the Mozambique Navy, led by Captain Tijo K Joseph and the Defence Advisor. The visit coincides with the celebration of 50 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations, according to an official statement by the Indian Navy.

During the four-day visit, the training squadron will conduct joint activities with the Mozambique Navy, including VBSS (Visit, Board, Search, and Seizure) exercises, cross-training on navigation and communication procedures, diving operations, and firefighting and damage control drills. Trainees will also visit various Mozambique Defence Forces training units, enhancing mutual understanding and operational interoperability. The visit will culminate in a PASSEX (Passing Exercise) and joint surveillance of Mozambique’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

Senior officers of 1TS, along with the commanding officers of the ships, are scheduled to pay courtesy calls to the Chief of Mozambique Navy, the Mayor of Maputo, and the Indian High Commissioner. Various socio-cultural engagements are also planned, including yoga sessions, community outreach, medical camps, school visits, and friendly sports fixtures.

The 1TS visit underscores growing maritime cooperation between India and Mozambique under the MAHASAGAR initiative, aiming to strengthen the “Bridges of Friendship” across the Indian Ocean. India shares a long history of trade and cultural ties with Mozambique, with people-to-people links predating the colonial era. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) highlighted that these historical connections have evolved into a robust bilateral relationship, supported by regular political engagements, expanding economic cooperation, and a well-integrated Indian community in Mozambique.
