Washington DC [US], May 18 (ANI): The US Secret Service has questioned former FBI Director James Comey regarding a now-deleted social media post featuring the number “8647” made with seashells, which some interpreted as a potential threat toward US President Donald Trump, according to The Hill.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed on Friday that the Secret Service conducted the interview and that the investigation is ongoing. Noem stated on X (formerly Twitter), “I will continue to take all measures necessary to ensure the protection of (Trump)… This is an ongoing investigation.”
The Department of Homeland Security did not provide additional details but reiterated that the Secret Service takes any potential threats against its protectees seriously. The agency stated, “We are aware of the social media posts by the former FBI director, and we take rhetoric like this very seriously.”
According to CNN, Comey met voluntarily with Secret Service agents at the Washington Field Office on Friday. He has denied any harmful intent behind the post, claiming that he was unaware that the numbers could be interpreted as inciting violence.
The controversy arose because the number “86” is often used as slang for eliminating someone, leading to speculation among Trump supporters that the post suggested assassinating the 47th president. Trump, who has survived previous assassination attempts, rejected Comey’s explanation, asserting, “He knew exactly what that meant,” during an interview with Fox News.
The Secret Service and Homeland Security began investigating the matter on Thursday, treating the post as a potential threat. (ANI)
