Aizawl (Mizoram) [India], June 1 (ANI): In a significant anti-drug operation, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized 9.72 kilograms of methamphetamine tablets valued at approximately Rs. 9.72 crore in the international illicit drug market from a vehicle in Seling, Mizoram, located on the Aizawl-Champhai Highway (NH-6). One person has been arrested in connection with the seizure, according to an official statement from the Ministry of Finance.
The contraband was discovered ingeniously hidden within a cavity on the rear seat of the vehicle, concealed in 10 packets. Both the methamphetamine tablets and the vehicle have been seized. The arrested individual is being prosecuted under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, which prescribes stringent penalties including rigorous imprisonment for up to 10 years.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the methamphetamine was smuggled into Mizoram from Myanmar via the Zokhawthar sector of the Indo-Myanmar border.
Since January 2025, the DRI has seized over Rs. 72 crore worth of methamphetamine and heroin in Mizoram and apprehended seven individuals, demonstrating continued vigilance against drug trafficking in the region.
In a related enforcement action, on May 30, the Amritsar DRI unit recovered USD 41,400 (approximately Rs. 35.40 lakh) in undeclared foreign currency from a passenger at Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport, Punjab. The currency, which exceeded the permissible limits under Reserve Bank of India (RBI) regulations, was cleverly concealed inside checked baggage on an Air India Express flight from Amritsar to Dubai. The passenger has been detained, and further investigation is underway under provisions of the Customs Act, 1962.
These operations underscore the government’s firm commitment to combating drug trafficking and illegal currency smuggling. (ANI)
