Serchhip (Mizoram) [India], June 1 (ANI): Continuous heavy rains have caused widespread destruction in Mizoram’s Serchhip district, resulting in the tragic death of one person and extensive property damage, officials reported.

Since May 30, incessant rainfall has triggered landslides and flooding across the district, severely impacting Serchhip town. According to a statement from the Directorate of Information & Public Relations, Mizoram, the landslide claimed the life of Ramzolura, a resident of P&E Veng.

“The incident occurred amid ongoing landslides and flooding triggered by incessant rainfall over the past two days,” the statement noted.

The District Emergency Operation Centre (DEOC), under Incident Commander and Additional Deputy Commissioner Lalrinzuala, convened an emergency meeting to coordinate rescue, relief, and restoration operations. District officials have inspected multiple affected sites throughout the town.

Four houses collapsed in the Dinthar Veng area due to landslides accompanied by an earthquake, causing road blockages and forcing several evacuations. In P&E Veng, three homes were destroyed, displacing four families. One fatality was confirmed in the Chanmari area, where two houses also collapsed. Four families were evacuated from Field Veng. A retaining wall collapse blocked the main road in Tuikhuah Veng, with one house collapsing in Chhim Veng. Families were evacuated from Hmar Veng, AOC Veng, and Vengchung areas, affecting eight locations in total. Numerous vehicles remain stranded as road clearing and repairs continue.

The district’s electricity supply has been severely disrupted due to falling trees and landslides damaging power lines. Authorities have urged residents to exercise caution and follow official safety advisories as restoration and relief efforts progress.

Notably, flash floods and multiple landslides across Mizoram on Saturday led to four fatalities, underscoring the ongoing severity of the monsoon season in the region. Official damage assessments are awaited. (ANI)
