Navi Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], May 2 (ANI): In a decisive move to clamp down on criminal activity and identify illegal immigrants, the Navi Mumbai Police initiated a major combing operation late Thursday night. The crackdown targets wanted and absconding criminals, as well as undocumented foreign nationals residing in the area.
Senior Police Inspector Nitin Thackeray confirmed that around 70 personnel have been mobilized for the operation, including two inspectors, seven officers, and 30 officials from the Riot Control Police (RCP) unit of Navi Mumbai, alongside other security personnel.
“We have constituted three teams for this operation. Specific zones have been mapped out for intensive investigation,” said Thackeray while speaking to ANI.
The operation includes checking past criminal records and verifying identities of suspects already on law enforcement’s radar. Authorities also intend to pursue cases under the Passport Act, 1967, where foreign nationals are found to be residing illegally.
Citizens have been urged to assist by reporting any information they may have about criminal elements or unauthorized immigrants. “If anyone has relevant information, they are encouraged to share it with the police. We guarantee that their identity will remain confidential and swift action will follow,” Thackeray assured.
This comes as neighboring Gujarat continues its crackdown on illegal Bangladeshi nationals. On April 30, Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi revealed that the state had demolished illegal encroachments housing undocumented Bangladeshis, particularly near Chandola Lake in Ahmedabad.
In that operation, over 180 Bangladeshi nationals were identified, and a large-scale demolition drive was conducted by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation with the assistance of more than 2,000 police personnel. The area of Bangal Vaas, known for housing a sizable number of illegal immigrants, was a focal point of the action.
Ahmedabad Police Commissioner Gyanendra Singh Malik also reported the arrest of Lallu Bihari, who allegedly facilitated illegal documentation including fake rental agreements, Aadhaar cards, and passports. Investigations are ongoing into broader networks that may be enabling such fraudulent activities.
Together, these actions signal a tightening of security and regulatory measures across urban regions in Maharashtra and Gujarat, with law enforcement aiming to tackle both criminal activity and immigration violations comprehensively.
