OSLO, May 18 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday called for the resolution of the West Asia crisis and the ongoing Ukraine war through dialogue and diplomacy, saying military action alone cannot deliver lasting peace.
Addressing a joint media briefing alongside Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store, Modi said India and Norway share a commitment to a rules-based international order and diplomatic engagement.
“India and Norway both believe in a rules-based order, dialogue, and diplomacy. We agree that no issue can be resolved through military conflict alone,” Modi said.
Referring to ongoing global conflicts, the prime minister added, “Be it Ukraine or West Asia, we will continue to support every effort for the early end of the conflict and for peace.”
The discussions took place shortly after Modi arrived in Oslo from Sweden as part of his ongoing four-nation European tour.
Highlighting the need for changes in global governance, Modi stressed the importance of reforming multilateral institutions to address emerging international challenges.
“We also agree on this point that reforming global institutions is essential for addressing the growing global challenges,” Modi said.
He further emphasized that eliminating terrorism in all forms remains a shared priority.
Recalling the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives, mostly tourists, Modi thanked Norway for supporting India during the crisis.
“I was supposed to visit Norway last year but had to postpone that trip due to the terrorist attack in Pahalgam. During that difficult time, Norway stood firmly with India against terrorism, demonstrating true friendship,” Modi said.
“Today, as I visit Norway, I express my heartfelt gratitude for that solidarity,” he added.
In a significant development in maritime cooperation, Modi welcomed Norway’s formal participation in the India-led Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative.
“As two major maritime nations, we will work together to strengthen cooperation in the marine economy, maritime security, and capacity building,” Modi said.
During the visit, Modi was also conferred with Norway’s highest civilian honor, the Grand Cross of the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit, recognizing his contribution to strengthening bilateral ties.
The award marks the 32nd international honor conferred upon Modi during his tenure as prime minister. (ANI)
