AMMAN, Jordan, June 23 (ANI) — One person died and eight others were injured after a stampede broke out during a crowded public gathering in central Amman as fans watched Jordan’s World Cup match against Algeria early Tuesday.
The Jordan News Agency, citing the country’s Public Security Directorate (PSD), reported that the incident occurred at Hashemite Square, where large numbers of supporters had gathered in the capital to watch Jordan’s 2-1 loss to Algeria.
According to the report, emergency teams transported nine injured people to hospitals after heavy congestion and sudden crowd movement triggered a stampede-like situation. One of the injured later died, while the others suffered minor to moderate injuries.
Authorities said an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the incident.
Large crowds had gathered across Amman to watch the match as Jordan competed in its first-ever World Cup campaign.
Meanwhile, Algeria kept its FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout-stage hopes alive with a hard-fought 2-1 comeback victory over Jordan in a Group J match at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium. The defeat ended Jordan’s campaign after just two matches.
Both teams entered the contest seeking a positive result following opening-match losses. While scoring opportunities were limited early on, Algeria gradually gained control of possession and capitalized on its chances. For Jordan, the loss confirmed elimination from the tournament in its maiden World Cup appearance after two consecutive defeats.
In Group J, defending champions Argentina lead the standings after winning both of their matches, collecting six points with a goal difference of plus-five. Austria are second with three points from two matches, having recorded one win and one loss. Algeria also have three points but sit third due to an inferior goal difference after one victory and one defeat. Jordan are at the bottom of the group with no points from two losses and have been eliminated from the competition. (ANI)
