India’s military response highlights a decisive shift in counterterrorism efforts.
New Delhi [India], May 12 (ANI): In a decisive move against terrorism, India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The operation came as a response to the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, which claimed the lives of 26 people. Indian forces targeted nine camps associated with terrorist groups Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), and Hizbul Mujahideen.
The operation, described by officials as a blend of military precision and strategic diplomacy, marked a turning point in India’s approach to counterterrorism. According to sources, the strikes penetrated deep into Pakistani territory, including sensitive regions like Bahawalpur in Punjab province, an area where even the US has previously hesitated to deploy drones.
Strategic Depth and Precision
The Indian Air Force (IAF) executed the strikes using Rafale jets equipped with SCALP missiles and HAMMER bombs. The mission, which lasted just 23 minutes, reportedly inflicted substantial damage on terror infrastructure without any loss of Indian assets. Additionally, the operation exposed weaknesses in Pakistan’s air defense systems, as the Indian ‘Akashteer’ air defense system intercepted multiple retaliatory drone attacks.
Escalation and Retaliation
Following the initial strikes, Indian forces also targeted 11 Pakistani air bases, including Nur Khan, Rafiqui, Murid, Sukkur, Sialkot, Pasrur, Chunian, Sargodha, Skardu, Bholari, and Jacobabad. A significant blow was dealt at the Bholari Air Base, where over 50 personnel, including Squadron Leader Usman Yousuf, were killed, and several fighter jets were destroyed.
In response to continued shelling by Pakistan along the Line of Control (LoC), Indian troops dismantled terrorist bunkers and military positions that posed threats to civilians. Despite retaliatory drone and missile attacks from Pakistan, Indian forces maintained robust defense, with no civilian or unrelated military targets struck.
A New Anti-Terror Doctrine
Operation Sindoor marks a strategic shift for India, emphasizing that any act of terrorism will meet a swift and firm response. This approach contrasts with past instances where international pressure often called for restraint. This time, however, global sentiment largely favored India’s stance, recognizing the operation’s focus on eliminating terrorist threats while avoiding escalation into a broader conflict.
International Repercussions
Global leaders have shown support for India’s proactive approach, acknowledging the operation’s moral and strategic grounding. By directly addressing terrorism rather than framing the conflict through the lens of the Kashmir issue, India has successfully realigned its counterterrorism narrative.
The operation demonstrated enhanced coordination among India’s armed forces, showcasing military synergy that underscores the country’s commitment to national security. With over 100 terrorists reportedly neutralized, Operation Sindoor sets a precedent for how India plans to address cross-border terrorism going forward.
