New Delhi, April 7 (ANI): BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi strongly criticized the opposition to the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, stating that state governments like Tamil Nadu and J&K are showing “utter contempt” for the Constitution by challenging a law passed by Parliament.
Speaking to the media, Trivedi said,
“The Waqf Bill has been passed through the constitutionally established process. Yet, state governments like those in Tamil Nadu and Jammu & Kashmir are opposing it. This clearly shows that they have utter contempt for the Constitution.”
He emphasized that no state government has the authority to oppose a law passed by the Indian Parliament, calling the disruption in the J&K Assembly a threat to constitutional values.
“If they are tearing apart the bill, it shows the Constitution is in danger in their hands,” he said.
Meanwhile, Congress MLA Irfan Hafeez Lone voiced strong opposition to the Waqf Amendment Act, describing it as an attack on secularism and federalism. He accused the Central Government of “brazenly violating” constitutional principles, saying the Act infringes on:
- Democracy
- Federalism
- Secularism
- Rule of Law
Chaos broke out in the J&K Assembly as opposition parties, including the National Conference, protested against the Act and Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather’s decision to reject their adjournment motion on the issue. The Speaker cited that the matter is sub judice and cannot be discussed.
On April 5, President Droupadi Murmu gave her assent to the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, after it was passed by both houses of Parliament:
- Rajya Sabha: 128 in favour, 95 against
- Lok Sabha: 288 in favour, 232 opposed
The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 aims to:
- Enhance the management of waqf properties
- Improve efficiency in survey, registration, and case disposal
- Empower stakeholders
- Promote development of waqf assets
The bill continues to spark fierce debate over religious autonomy vs. state oversight, with implications for constitutional law and minority rights. (ANI)
