Stuck in the Mire

Published: December 3, 2025 | Updated: December 3, 2025 1 minute read

By Rajan George

A baby elephant and her mom
Were stuck deep down in the marsh.
With all their might they tried so hard
To extricate themselves to no avail.

The harder they tried, the deeper they sank,
Finding no way to lift themselves out.
There was no rescue they could hope for,
Nor did they know what to hope for.

Consigned to their fate till death, yet still
They tried hard as they could, with no relief.
The onlookers who pitied their plight
Were anguished but were weak to lend a hand.

But then arrived a crew equipped
To pull them from the miry clay.
With straps they pulled the little one out,
But returned, refusing to leave her mother trapped.

The crew then, risking their own lives,
Strapped the mother with great effort,
Slowly pulling her out from the marsh,
Enabling her to stand firm on solid ground.

The baby elephant too was dragged out
From the mire with much more ease.
She stood gleefully by her mother, resolved
To follow her wherever she roamed.

Even beasts care for their own.
They speak a language we seldom decipher—
The language of pure, undefiled love
That never betrays, cheats, disowns, or fails.

We too, as humans, were steeped in mire,
Where we were stuck with no way out.
There was only One who risked it all—
Jesus Christ, who pulled us out.
