KARACHI, Pakistan, June 28 (ANI) — Three paramilitary personnel and three militants were killed in an attack on the Sindh Rangers headquarters in Karachi’s Gulistan-i-Jauhar locality on Saturday, according to Pakistan’s Sindh police chief, as reported by Dawn.
Sindh Inspector General Javed Alam Odho said the attackers rammed the facility’s main gate with a vehicle. Authorities initially were unable to confirm whether an explosion also took place during the assault.
Odho said a “mopping-up operation” was underway, and the area had been sealed off by Special Security Unit (SSU) commandos, Anti-Terrorist Force (ATF) personnel, and Rangers forces.
Police Surgeon Summaiya Syed told Dawn that one injured paramilitary soldier was taken to hospital after sustaining a gunshot wound to the leg.
Earlier, law enforcement agencies rushed to the scene following reports of heavy gunfire and an explosion. The surrounding area was subsequently cordoned off.
Sindh’s Rescue 1122 said it received reports of an explosion near Gulistan-i-Jauhar Block 5 and dispatched emergency response teams to the site from its central command and control centre.
An affiliate of Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, a splinter faction of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), later claimed responsibility for the attack, according to Al Jazeera. The group said nine attackers were involved.
The incident comes amid a rise in militant attacks targeting Pakistan’s security forces across the country.
Earlier this year, the U.S. Embassy in Pakistan issued a security alert for American citizens following reports of a suicide bombing at a Shia mosque in the Tarlai Kalan area on the outskirts of Islamabad.
According to Dawn, at least 31 people were killed and 169 injured in that attack during Friday prayers at the Imambargah Khadijah-tul-Kubra in Tarlai. Authorities said forensic analysis had identified multiple travel links of the suspected attacker to Afghanistan. (ANI)
