Beijing [China], May 14 (ANI): US President Donald Trump has invited Chinese President Xi Jinping and First Lady Peng Liyuan to the White House for a summit scheduled for September 24, extending an invitation for a reciprocal visit during his ongoing state visit to China.
The invitation emerged as a key moment during Trump’s address in Beijing, where he praised the relationship between the two global powers and highlighted what he described as deep mutual respect between their peoples.
“The citizens of both nations have a deep sense of mutual respect,” Trump said, while expressing gratitude for the “magnificent welcome” he received at the start of his visit.
Reflecting on his talks with Xi, the 79-year-old US president described the discussions as “extremely positive and constructive.”
Warmth between the two leaders was evident during the state banquet hosted by the Chinese side, where Trump referred to Xi as “my friend” during his opening remarks.
Trump also reflected on the historical roots of US-China relations, recalling how early American traders arriving in China were described by locals as “the new people.”
Placing the modern relationship in a broader global context, Trump said ties between Washington and Beijing had become among “the most consequential” in the world.
Concluding his remarks, Trump reaffirmed his desire for continued engagement by formally inviting Xi and Peng to Washington in September.
The diplomatic gesture followed Trump’s return to China after nearly a decade, marking a visit that has drawn intense global attention.
Trump was welcomed at the Great Hall of the People with full military honors and an elaborate red-carpet ceremony hosted by Xi Jinping. The US national anthem echoed through the hall as schoolchildren waving colorful pom-poms greeted the visiting delegation.
The ceremony preceded formal talks focused on trade, technology, Taiwan, and broader geopolitical tensions.
During the summit, Xi said the international community was navigating “profound changes” and warned against falling into the so-called “Thucydides Trap” — the theory that rivalry between emerging and established powers can lead to conflict.
Calling for stability in bilateral relations, Xi said China and the United States should act as “partners, not rivals.”
He added that the two nations have “more common interests than differences” and called for opening a “new chapter” in US-China relations.
Echoing the optimistic tone, Trump praised Xi as a “great leader” and predicted that bilateral relations would become “better than ever before.”
Accompanied by a delegation of American corporate and technology executives, Trump said US businesses were eager to expand trade and investment ties with China.
Describing the summit as “maybe the biggest ever,” Trump expressed confidence that the talks could reshape the global economic landscape.
The meeting took place against the backdrop of ongoing tensions related to Iran and increasing political debate within Washington over US involvement in Middle East conflicts. (ANI)
