Washington D.C., April 19 (ANI): U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday suggested that the United States might “take a pass” on efforts to broker peace talks between Russia and Ukraine if either party makes negotiations too difficult.
Trump’s statement reflected frustration with the ongoing conflict and the challenges involved in securing peace. “If, for some reason, one of the two parties makes it very difficult, we’re just going to say, ‘You’re foolish, you’re foolish. You’re horrible people,’ and we’re just going to take a pass,” Trump said.
Despite the tough message, Trump expressed cautious optimism, stating, “I think we have a really good chance of getting it done. It’s coming to a head right now.”
The comments came after U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio suggested that the peace efforts in Ukraine could be abandoned in “days” if no progress is made. Speaking in Paris after talks with European, Ukrainian, and Russian officials, Rubio emphasized the urgency of determining whether the war can be ended. “We need to determine very quickly now, and I’m talking about a matter of days, whether or not this is doable,” Rubio said.
Rubio and special envoy Steve Witkoff have been engaging European and Ukrainian allies as part of the Trump administration’s ongoing efforts to end the war. Rubio further noted, “If it’s not possible, if we’re so far apart that this is not going to happen, then I think the president is probably at a point where he’s going to say we’re done. It’s not our war. We didn’t start it.”
The U.S. has been assisting Ukraine for the past three years, but Trump has repeatedly underscored that it is not America’s war to fight.
