Rio de Janeiro [Brazil], July 7 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday announced that under India’s upcoming chairmanship, the BRICS grouping would be redefined with a renewed vision focused on “Building Resilience and Innovation for Cooperation and Sustainability.”
Addressing the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Prime Minister Modi said,
“Under India’s BRICS Chairmanship, we will define BRICS in a new form. BRICS will stand for ‘Building Resilience and Innovation for Cooperation and Sustainability’.”
He affirmed that India would carry forward the spirit of people-centric progress during its leadership of the bloc, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
“In the coming year, under India’s BRICS Chairmanship, we will continue close cooperation on all subjects,” the Prime Minister added.
PM Modi recalled how India’s recent G20 presidency elevated the voice of the Global South and pledged a similar approach for BRICS.
“Just as during our G-20 Presidency, we ensured inclusivity and prioritized issues of the Global South in the agenda,” he said. “In the same way, during our BRICS Chairmanship, we will take this forum forward with a people-centric approach and the spirit of Humanity First.”
Earlier in the day, this message of unity and cooperation was symbolized as PM Modi joined other BRICS leaders, partners, and outreach invitees for the traditional family photo at the summit venue.
The 17th BRICS Summit, hosted by Brazil from July 7 to July 9, 2025, brought together leaders from the original BRICS nations—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—along with new member countries Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE, and Indonesia. The summit marked a significant moment of strategic dialogue and collaboration among these emerging economies.
The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) confirmed Modi’s participation in the summit held in Rio de Janeiro from July 6–7.
During the summit, leaders held productive discussions across a broad agenda, including the reform of global governance, enhancing the voice of the Global South, peace and security, strengthening multilateralism, development cooperation, and the future of Artificial Intelligence.
In his remarks at the inaugural session on “Reform of Global Governance and Peace and Security,” PM Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to representing the interests of developing nations.
He stressed the urgent need to reform legacy global institutions to meet contemporary challenges.
“Global institutions created in the 20th century are ill-equipped to deal with the realities of the 21st century,” he said.
He called for reforming the UN Security Council, IMF, World Bank, and WTO, and thanked the BRICS leaders for acknowledging the urgency of Security Council reform in the Summit Declaration.
On peace and security, PM Modi underlined that terrorism remains one of humanity’s gravest threats. Citing the Pahalgam terror attack in April 2025, he emphasized that it was not just an attack on India, but an assault on global humanity.
“Those who fund, promote, or provide safe havens to terrorists must face the harshest actions. There should be no double standards in dealing with terrorism,” he stated, thanking fellow BRICS leaders for condemning the Pahalgam attack in the strongest terms.
The Prime Minister also expressed concern over ongoing global conflicts, from West Asia to Europe, reiterating India’s long-standing position in favor of dialogue and diplomacy.
In the session titled “Strengthening Multilateralism, Economic-Financial Affairs, and Artificial Intelligence,” PM Modi highlighted the importance of diversity and multipolarity as strengths of BRICS.
“In a time when the global order is under pressure and the world faces uncertainty, the relevance of BRICS is even more evident,” he remarked, noting the group’s growing capacity to shape a multipolar world.
PM Modi offered four key proposals to strengthen BRICS cooperation:
- The New Development Bank should adopt demand-driven principles and emphasize long-term sustainability in project funding.
- Establish a Science and Research Repository to benefit countries of the Global South.
- Focus on securing and strengthening critical minerals supply chains.
- Promote responsible AI governance while also encouraging innovation and inclusivity in AI development.
Following the Leaders’ Session, the member nations adopted the ‘Rio de Janeiro Declaration’, affirming their shared vision for an inclusive, reformed, and multipolar global order.
