New Delhi [India], April 20 (ANI): US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor has said that an Indian trade delegation will arrive in the United States this week for Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) negotiations, calling it a significant step toward finalizing a trade deal.
In a post on X, Gor described the proposed agreement as a “win-win” for both nations. “The Indian trade delegation will be arriving in Washington this week. A great step to finalize our bilateral trade deal. A win-win for both nations!” he said.
India and the United States are set to resume negotiations on the proposed BTA in Washington, DC. Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal had earlier said that the Indian delegation would visit the United States from April 20 to 22.
He noted that the resumption of negotiations marks a key step in advancing trade ties between the two countries.
India and the United States had announced on February 7 that they had reached a framework for an interim agreement on reciprocal and mutually beneficial trade. The framework reaffirmed both countries’ commitment to broader BTA negotiations launched by President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 13, 2025.
The agreement is expected to include expanded market access commitments and support more resilient supply chains. It is also being viewed as a milestone in strengthening economic ties, reflecting a shared commitment to balanced and reciprocal trade based on mutual interests and tangible outcomes.
Last month, the commerce secretary said India remains engaged with the United States to finalize a mutually beneficial trade agreement. He noted that on February 7, 2026, the United States removed the 25% additional ad valorem tariffs imposed on certain Indian exports, which had been linked to India’s imports of Russian oil.
He also said that, following a US Supreme Court judgment on February 20, 2026, invalidating reciprocal tariffs, those tariffs are no longer in force.
However, the US government has issued executive orders imposing 10% tariffs under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974 on certain products from multiple countries. India continues to engage with the United States to address these measures and advance negotiations, he added.
Sources indicated that the United States is working to establish a new global tariff framework and that a trade agreement may be finalized once that structure is in place.
Commerce Ministry officials have reiterated that India and the United States remain actively engaged in discussions, with no pause in bilateral negotiations. (ANI)
