J-K: Security Tightened in Poonch, Rajouri Amid Escalating Border Tensions

Poonch (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], May 6 (ANI) — In response to heightened tensions following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam and continued ceasefire violations, security has been significantly intensified across Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in the districts of Poonch and Rajouri. Security personnel have established vehicle checkpoints along key roads and highways, conducting random inspections and identity verification to enhance vigilance in the border areas.

The security escalation comes in the wake of repeated incidents of unprovoked small-arms firing from Pakistani forces across the Line of Control (LoC), which were met with a proportionate response from the Indian Army. Visuals from Poonch and Rajouri show uniformed personnel halting vehicles, requesting identification, and in some cases, searching luggage.

According to an official statement from the Indian Army, “During the night of May 5-6, 2025, the Pakistan Army resorted to unprovoked small-arms firing from posts across the LoC in areas opposite Kupwara, Baramulla, Poonch, Rajouri, Mendhar, Naushera, Sunderbani, and Akhnoor. The Indian Army responded in a proportionate manner.”

This incident follows similar exchanges on May 4, when Pakistani forces engaged in small-arms fire targeting the same regions across the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The Indian Army has maintained a heightened state of alert in these areas and continues to closely monitor the situation.

In another strong retaliatory measure, the Government of India closed its airspace to all aircraft registered in Pakistan or operated by Pakistani carriers. The Ministry of Civil Aviation issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM), declaring that the airspace would remain closed from April 30 through May 23. The move applies to all Pakistani military and civilian flights and is widely viewed as a firm diplomatic signal following the Pahalgam terrorist attack on April 22 that left 26 people dead.

Additionally, on April 29, the Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both India and Pakistan held a hotline discussion concerning the escalating ceasefire violations. According to defense sources, India issued a stern warning to Pakistan over its unprovoked firing across both the LoC and the International Border, cautioning against further breaches of the ceasefire agreement.

Security agencies remain on high alert as tensions continue to rise along the border, with intensified checks, military readiness, and precautionary measures being enforced to ensure civilian safety and territorial integrity. (ANI)
