Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], April 7 (ANI): After meeting West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, several teachers who lost their jobs following a Supreme Court verdict expressed frustration, alleging that the state government offered mere symbolic relief instead of real action. One teacher, Suman Biswas, remarked that the CM had given a “lollipop” and blamed the state government for corruption in the recruitment process.
“The CM, her cabinet, and the commission are all involved in corruption. Bribes were taken for jobs. Now, she’s offering voluntary jobs to 25,000 as a cover-up. This is not justice. This is a lollipop,” said Biswas. He also called on the CM to publish the names of innocent employees and file a review petition in the Supreme Court. He warned of an upcoming large-scale movement.
Another affected teacher, Meenakshi Singh, claimed she followed all procedures and never paid a bribe. “They have taken our jobs by branding us as ineligible. I have all my documents. I went through every stage of recruitment fairly. Today, they’re offering us social service jobs — why should we settle for that? What about our families, our future?” she questioned.
Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee met with a group of affected teachers and alleged a wider “conspiracy to destroy the education system.” She defended the integrity of many of those impacted, stating, “You are calling them thieves and incompetent. Who gave you that right?” Banerjee also declared that she would continue to fight for the eligible candidates.
“The Supreme Court has not yet provided a list of those eligible who lost jobs. Until I’m alive, I won’t let any deserving candidate suffer,” she said, emphasizing the government’s responsibility to protect rightful employment.
The controversy stems from the April 3 Supreme Court ruling, which upheld the Calcutta High Court’s decision to cancel the recruitment of over 25,000 teachers and non-teaching staff made by the West Bengal School Service Commission (SSC) in 2016, citing irregularities and corruption.
