Kevadia (Gujarat) [India], October 2 (ANI): The Statue of Unity, a towering 182-metre tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel inaugurated in 2018 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has emerged as one of India’s premier global attractions. Located in Kevadia, Gujarat, the statue stands not only as a symbol of the Iron Man of India’s legacy but also as a catalyst for cultural pride and economic empowerment.
Amit Arora, CEO of the Statue of Unity Area Development & Tourism Authority, said the development of the surrounding area is rooted in themes of unity, Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (the world as one family), and a vision to create a world-class tourist destination. Over the years, the region has been transformed into a vibrant hub featuring attractions such as Ekta Nursery, immersive evening laser shows, and family-friendly experiences.
Tourists have lauded the initiative. Dr. Purushottam Sahu said, “Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel dedicated his life to India’s unity, bringing the entire nation together. To honour his legacy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi envisioned and built the Statue of Unity.” Pinaki Vijay Chowski praised the facilities for senior citizens, noting the availability of lifts, guides, seating, and drinking water that enhance the visitor experience.
The project has also spurred social and economic progress for local communities. Tribal women trained to operate pink electric autos now provide vital transport services within the complex. Geeta, a driver, said, “Earlier, we used to stay at home, but once we started driving the autos, we found work and began contributing to the household income. Now, everything is going well.” Eco-friendly e-carts ferry visitors from entry gates to the statue, creating further job opportunities. Sanjaybhai Jitendrabhai, a driver, said, “It is so good that the government built this Statue of Unity. This has given livelihood to youths in the region. It has been beneficial to all those who work here.”
Through modern infrastructure, inclusive employment, and sustainable transport initiatives, the Statue of Unity has become more than a landmark — it stands as a model of how heritage preservation can drive tourism, empower local communities, and foster regional development.
