New Delhi [India], September 1 (ANI): Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections in August rose 6.5 percent to about Rs 1.86 lakh crore, compared to Rs 1.74 lakh crore in the same month last year, according to official data released Monday. Collections of Central GST, State GST, Integrated GST, and cess all increased year-on-year.

For April–August 2025-26, GST collections rose 9.9 percent to about Rs 10 lakh crore, against Rs 9.13 lakh crore in the same period last fiscal, with all components—CGST, SGST, IGST, and cess—showing growth.

India’s GST system reached a major milestone in 2024-25, achieving a record gross collection of Rs 22.08 lakh crore, reflecting a 9.4 percent increase over the previous year. The average monthly collection of Rs 1.84 lakh crore was the highest since GST was launched in 2017.

GST collections have steadily grown over the years, from Rs 11.37 lakh crore in 2020-21 to Rs 20.18 lakh crore in 2023-24, reflecting stronger economic activity and improved compliance. The recent figures indicate robust domestic consumption and buoyant import activity, contributing positively to India’s fiscal health and economic recovery amid global uncertainties.

The Goods and Services Tax was implemented on July 1, 2017, with states assured compensation for any revenue loss under the GST (Compensation to States) Act, 2017, for five years. The GST Council, chaired by the Union Finance Minister and including state finance ministers, has been instrumental in shaping policy and simplifying the system. Since its formation in 2016, the Council has held 55 meetings and taken key decisions to make GST more business-friendly.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, from the ramparts of the Red Fort on August 15, announced that next-generation GST reforms are planned by Diwali. The next GST Council meeting is scheduled for September 3–4 in Delhi, where the reform agenda is expected to be discussed. (ANI)
