LUCKNOW, India, June 22 — Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday announced financial assistance of ₹500,000 for the families of those killed in the devastating fire at a coaching center in Lucknow’s Aliganj area. The state government will also provide ₹50,000 to each injured victim, according to the Chief Minister’s Office.
The announcement came as the death toll from the tragedy rose to 15. Several others were injured after a massive fire broke out in a building housing a library and a computer training institute.
After visiting the site and meeting with injured survivors, Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak described the incident as both “heart-wrenching” and “horrific.”
Speaking to reporters, Pathak recounted the desperate efforts made by those trapped inside the building to escape the flames and smoke.
“The injured told us that the fire broke out suddenly. Smoke from the fire came from the first floor. As they started to leave, there was a fire on the stairs, so they ran toward the back. Some people climbed down using a cable. Those who survived either jumped or used the cable to escape,” Pathak said.
He assured the affected families that the government would provide full support and ensure accountability.
“This is a very major, heart-wrenching incident. We will never forget this tragedy; it is a lesson for all of us. The affected families will receive justice under all circumstances. The entire government stands with them,” he said.
Pathak said one of the injured victims was undergoing surgery after suffering a serious abdominal injury while attempting to escape the blaze.
“One person’s operation is underway. He sustained a stomach injury from an iron angle while falling. The remaining injured are out of danger. All necessary arrangements have been made to ensure they receive proper treatment,” he said.
The deputy chief minister added that specially constituted teams would conduct post-mortem examinations of the victims and confirmed that a high-level investigation had been ordered.
“Nothing can be concluded at first glance. We will be able to comment only after the investigation is completed. However, strict action will be taken against anyone found responsible,” Pathak said.
The state government has also directed officials to review fire safety regulations and ensure that buildings frequented by children and large groups have adequate emergency exits and safety measures to prevent similar incidents.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
