New Delhi [India], October 1 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday expressed deep sorrow over the massive earthquake that struck the Philippines, offering condolences to those affected and reaffirming India’s support for the nation during this crisis.

In a post on X, PM Modi said, “Deeply saddened to learn about the loss of lives and widespread damage caused by the earthquake in the Philippines. My thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families. I wish the injured a speedy recovery. India stands in solidarity with the Philippines at this difficult time.”

According to Al Jazeera, at least 69 people have been confirmed dead and nearly 150 injured after a powerful magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck off the coast of Cebu, a central Philippine island province. The United States Geological Survey reported that the quake occurred at 9:59 pm local time on Tuesday (13:59 GMT), near Bogo city, which has a population of about 90,000. The earthquake was followed by four aftershocks of magnitude 5 or higher.

Local authorities declared a “state of calamity” in parts of Cebu as the earthquake caused extensive power outages and structural damage. The Cebu provincial government issued a call for medical volunteers on its official Facebook page to assist with relief efforts.

Pamela Baricuatro, Governor of Cebu, said in a social media video, “We are still assessing the damage. But it could be worse than we think.” She confirmed that an unspecified number of homes and a hospital sustained damage and noted that emergency medical teams were being deployed to aid the injured. Governor Baricuatro also stated that she was in contact with the president’s office to request further assistance.

India’s expression of solidarity reflects its long-standing tradition of supporting nations in times of natural disasters, reinforcing the bonds of friendship between the two countries. (ANI)
