Indian Navy Delivers 67 Tons of Medical Aid to Yemen Following Flash Floods

Indian Navy delivers 67 tons of medical aid to Yemen following flash floods

New Delhi [India], November 27 (ANI): The Indian Navy delivered approximately 67 tons of medical aid to Yemen to assist communities affected by catastrophic flash floods that struck the southern and southeastern parts of the country in August.

According to a post on X, the aid, packed in 4,572 boxes, was delivered on Tuesday by Indian Naval Ship (INS) Chennai as part of India’s ongoing humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations.

The Indian Navy said the mission underscores its commitment to providing timely humanitarian support and highlights India’s role as a reliable partner and first responder in the region. “INS Chennai successfully undertook humanitarian assistance in Yemen, delivering approximately 67 tons of medical aid (4,572 boxes) on November 25 to support communities affected by catastrophic flash floods. This mission reaffirms the Indian Navy’s unwavering commitment to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief,” the Navy stated.

The relief material is intended to support communities severely impacted by the flash floods, which were caused by heavy rainfall and claimed at least 14 lives across several provinces, according to Anadolu Agency.

India has a long-standing relationship with Yemen, being among the first countries to recognize the Yemen Arab Republic (YAR) in 1962 and the People’s Democratic Republic of Yemen (PDRY) in 1967. After the 1990 unification of YAR and PDRY into the Republic of Yemen, India has consistently prioritized humanitarian support for the country.

India has previously provided assistance through the supply of medicines and food commodities. As part of its Vaccine Maitri initiative, India supplied 360,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses via the COVAX facility in March 2021 and has exported over 250,000 tons of wheat to Yemen since April 2022 to mitigate global supply disruptions.
