TEL AVIV, Israel, May 31 (ANI/TPS) — The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced that it launched a broad military operation several days ago in the Beaufort Ridge and Wadi Saluki areas of southern Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah infrastructure and operatives.
According to the IDF, the operation is intended to strengthen operational control in southern Lebanon and eliminate what it described as a direct threat to communities in the Finger of the Galilee region and the town of Metula.
The military said its forces crossed the Litani River and expanded strikes against Hezbollah positions north of the river. Operations are continuing and are being extended to additional areas, according to the IDF.
Numerous ground forces, including infantry and armored units, have been deployed as part of an effort to expand the military’s forward defense line, an area in southern Lebanon that the IDF says it is clearing of Hezbollah forces.
The IDF also reported that troops are targeting launch infrastructure in the area that it said had been used to carry out hundreds of attacks against Israeli civilians and military personnel operating in southern Lebanon.
Before the ground operation began, the Israeli Air Force conducted what the military described as massive strikes against Hezbollah infrastructure in the region. The campaign was supported by artillery and tank fire as part of a broader military operation.
According to the IDF, forces also carried out a series of strikes on strategically important terrain, conducted searches for military infrastructure in the Litani River area, and completed engineering operations to support the offensive campaign.
The military said it is also operating near Nabatieh, which it described as a significant Hezbollah stronghold in southern Lebanon, and indicated that it remains prepared to expand operations if necessary.
The latest campaign follows dozens of other military operations conducted by Israeli forces in recent weeks as part of ongoing efforts to degrade Hezbollah’s capabilities in southern Lebanon. (ANI/TPS)
